About
Little Athletics started in the early 1960′s in Victoria. It is uniquely Australian in concept although over the years it has spread in a limited way to other parts of the world. It started out as a ‘fill in’ activity for children too young to participate in ‘Senior Athletics’ but has since developed its own unique character.
Lanyon Little Athletics was formed for the 1993/94 season with 40 registered athletes. Upon development of a Constitution and in adherence with the Associations Incorporation Act 1991 the club was duly registered as an independent entity in the Australian Capital Territory. The centre is a non-profit organisation and is affiliated with the Tuggeranong Valley Rugby Union and Amateur Sports Club Inc. (Vikings). Training and competition activities commenced on the Gordon Playing Fields, utilising existing Gordon Primary School field facilties and with the installation of a laned track on one of the ovals. Last season our Centre had more than 200 members.
Our home base is the Banks Oval off Betty Maloney Cres, Banks approximately 20 kilometres due south from the centre of Canberra City. Our competition season is held from October through to March on Saturday mornings with an approximate four week break from competition over the Christmas period. Various carnivals are held during the season at which athletes are encouraged to attend. Training is held at the oval on Wednesday evenings during the Competition period with a break over the Christmas period.
The Little Athletics motto of ‘family, fun, and fitness’ is evident right through our association, with parents of the little athletes being involved at all levels of the sport.
